When Turned: Season 5, Episode 1 (ish) When attacked by Foyet.
History:
Canon events through mid-season 5. When he is attacked by Foyet at the end of season 4/beginning of season 5 Foyet (a snake therian) infects him. He spends the next months distancing himself even more than he does in canon. After the events Episodes 9 & 10 of season 5 Hotch decides to accept the retirement offer Strauss gives him. He moves himself and Jack out of the city, somewhere they can be safe, somewhere he won't be discovered so easily. He can't stay with the FBI, if there was a case during the full moon... it's too dangerous, for his team and for himself. He still keeps in contact with them, though, still drives out to visit Jessica and Jack will often stay with her for the weekend while he goes out to visit with Dave and the team. Even so far apart Dave is still his best friend.
What they're doing now: Working part time as an adviser and deputy for the local sheriff's station. (He is technically retired after all) Though the BAU does still call him for consultations from time to time.
